How the four hours go

  1. Check in at Honokōhau Harbor

    15–20 min

Park free at the small boat harbor. Your crew fits masks and fins, then runs the safety briefing before we cast off.

  2. South along the Kona coast

    about 1 hr

The RHIB runs fast along the lava shoreline, easing off for history stops as the cliffs rise toward the bay.

  3. Snorkel Kealakekua Bay

    1 hr in the water

We tie up off the white obelisk of the Captain Cook Monument. Lifeguard-certified guides swim with you over the reef.

  4. Home past sea caves and lava tubes

    about 1 hr

On the way back the crew noses into sea caves and lava tubes. In season, watch for spinner dolphins, pilot whales and humpbacks.

What's included

  • Mask, snorkel and fins
  • Flotation noodle
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Lifeguard-certified guide in the water

Swim through the warm, clear waters of the Big Island's best snorkeling spot. Kealakekua Bay is protected as a Marine Life Conservation District, and the reef off the Captain Cook Monument is one of the liveliest on the island.

Getting there is half the trip. Our 27.8-foot RHIB covers the coast from Honokōhau Harbor in about an hour, stopping along the way for the history of the Kona coast. The way home passes sea caves, lava tubes and, in season, dolphins and whales.

Before you book

How well do I need to swim?

You need to be comfortable swimming in deep, open water, but you don't need to be an athlete. Flotation noodles are on board. You can't stand on the bottom here: the coral is alive and protected.

Non-swimmers can ride along and stay on the boat.

Is there a minimum age?

Guests must be 3 or older. Children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.

Can I come if I'm pregnant?

No. Snorkeling itself is fine during pregnancy, but the boat ride is too rough, so we can't take guests who are pregnant.

Is there a bathroom on board?

No, the boat doesn't have a bathroom. Use the facilities at the harbor before we leave.

What's your cancellation policy?

Refundable tickets: cancel 48 hours or more before your tour for a full refund.

Non-refundable tickets: no refunds, but you can rebook for free up to 48 hours out.

If we cancel because of ocean conditions, you get a full refund. Travel insurance is a good idea.

What should I bring?

Swimsuit, towel, sunglasses, a sun hat, a sun-protective shirt or cover-up, and reef-safe, non-aerosol sunscreen. An underwater camera is a good idea. Storage on the boat is limited.
